SEO Techniques and Paging Internet Sites

Today I get to talk about optimizing for search engines. I will deal in particular the use of techniques paging for websites and their impact on the search engines.   1. How to create an architecture as flat as possible to your website so as to combat the depth created by the system paging.
  2. How to make URL links that allow you to switch between the pages, whether they belong to the same article, that in order to scroll through the list of available items.
Before addressing these arguments, however, there is another important thing to watch. With the paging systems there is the possibility of hitting in the famous problems of duplicate content. If after reading this article you will think to change the way in which the URLs shown, the best approach that you can follow, in my opinion, is as follows:

Use 301 redirects: If you have restructured your site, use 301 redirects (“permanent address”) in the. Htaccess file to redirect users, Googlebot, and other spiders in a smart way. In Apache, you can do this with a. Htaccess file, while you can use the IIS management console.
That said, I can pass to the analysis of the two points above.

Flat architecture: How?

Compared to what I said before, it would seem that the paging ports of serious damage that may question its use in some contexts. The truth is that is not in question its use but you need to figure out if alone is sufficient to meet all needs.

To what has been said so far, the answer is no, and then the problem arises of which technique to also use. What we want is to have a way that is fast and mnemonic to access the content in depth for both users and search engine crawlers.

One of the methods most commonly used, especially by CMS like WordPress and Joomla, is the use of tags to be assigned to content. They are also useful to allow users to filter the content based on the topics that interest thus improving the usability of its website.

To better understand the speech, go on to show a practical example. Say you have a site with 1000 news and a paging system that, for each page, it shows 10. If the paging was the only way to navigate through the content, go to the last page, for example, it would be a nightmare for both users and search engines.

How to make URLs?

In this section I will explain the pros and cons of different approaches for creating URLs in paging systems. Below I will use the term link juice. It, in the field of SEO, refers to the authority, trust, credibility and value that the search engines reside in a given URL (which is usually associated with a web page). Therefore, the higher the link juice of a URL, the more likely that it overrides the pages of competing sites whose content is on the same subject.
As a sub-directory (url-base/pagina/2)
  • Cons: You lose link juice page with URL url-base. This is because each piece of URLs added using the separator ‘/’, which simulates a sub-directory, makes the new URL a source independent in the eyes of search engines because it does not use parameters. The new URL, then, will be considered independently from all others.
  • Pros: If your website or CMS used is already using the symbol ‘/’ as a separator between parameters, which is a good thing in many cases, this solution will give continuity to the website created or CMS provider may vary.
As a parameter (url-base? Page = 2)
  • Cons: Although Google and other search engines now manage the parameters without any problem, you are allowing the engine itself to decide for you if a parameter is important or not and even if they have to consider or ignore them. This of course is true unless an explicit configuration but it must be done for each search engine using the appropriate panel to manage their websites (such as Google Webmaster Tools for Google).
  • Pros: For the same reason discussed above, and this system does not create the new URL and this allows you to accumulate link juice on the page with URL url-base. This, however, may be irrelevant as a good optimization requires that the link juice is given on pages themselves, those that contain the details of the news. If we take into account the previous example in which there was a page that listed all news pagination  it is important that it has link juice as the disperse. The real optimization, in this case, is to send the URL for the entire contents of the single news. In this case, therefore, would go very well the system to sub-directory.


Let me, finally, to give a final piece of advice regarding the use of pagination. For about a year, Google has introduced a system that can help them to identify the relationship between pages through the use of a meta tag to be inserted in the head section of the page.

The meta tag makes use of the rel and the expected values for the next and prev next pages for the previous ones (but looks a little! ‘). More information can be found in the article released by Google on the topic (in English) entitled Pagination with rel = “next” and rel = “prev”.
