Google Penguin Is Here to Help Make Writing Articles More Effective

The Google Penguin update is not here to stop you writing articles, but is intended to prevent you gaining a high search engine ranking falsely.
By learning how to write effectively without over-use of keywords and sourcing your backlinks fairly, Google makes it even easier to beat your competition to the top of the listings.

The search engine is simply trying to give its customers, those that use the search engine for information, a better service – and by assisting the search engine to achieve this you can take a big step towards a good ranking.
Google is not particularly targeting poor quality content here , although you will suffer if your page text is full of unnecessary instances of your keywords.

It is your backlink sources and how you keep using the same anchor text and the same landing page on your website in all your articles.
So there you have it in a nutshell – how to keep on the right side of the Google penguin update. To be more specific:

Your Web Page Content

Keep writing articles, but keep it natural and avoid keyword spamming. The Google Penguin update is about webspam, and part of that is how people stuff web pages with keywords in the hope that will get them a high listing.

It won’t – it will get the page demoted. You should work to a maximum of around 1% keyword density – Ezine Articles applies a limit of 2%, but that includes related terms, so ‘writing articles’ and ‘article writing’ could be regarded as the same.

Normally, I would go no more that 1%, if that, although 2% should be regarded as a top figure. For example, although your keyword might be ‘golf balls,’ you still use the word ‘golf’ in ‘golf clubs,’ golf courses,’ and so on – even if ‘golf’ is not your intended keyword, the algorithm doesn’t know that.

The algorithm will regard ‘golf’ as being a keyword in the way you understand keywords (Google analyzes word frequency statistically and does not look upon keyword in the same way that you and I do) and if the frequency of that word is above a specific level, then your ranking position may suffer (only Google knows that level).

So write naturally and don’t worry about keyword density, other than to keep it low although not so low that the main topic is not lost. Be sensible and do not work to numbers.

Your Anchor Text

Many people use the same anchor text in their links time after time. Mix it up: when you are writing your resource, or creating in-text links that readers can click, it makes sense to use your primary keyword or phrase as the anchor text (the text that is highlighted as a link).
However, don’t just use the same keyword in all your articles. If your website focuses on article writing or article marketing, avoid the temptation to keep repeating the word ‘article’ in the text.

You could use terms such as ‘copywriting,’ ‘content,’ ‘essay,’ ‘passage,’ ‘dissertation’ and ‘work.’ If you can’t think of synonyms to use go to thesaurus.com and you will find a whole host of them. Google Penguin will punish backlinks if the anchor text is repetitive.

Your Linking Strategy

The Google Penguin update looks for a diverse source for the links leading back to your web pages. If you use link farms for your backlinks, and large numbers of links are pointing back to the same page from the same source, then your ranking will be adversely affected.

The same is true if your links are predominantly from poor quality web pages and pages not directly connected with the topic of those to which they link.

Mix your links between different sources, and also different types of source. For example, don’t have all your articles published on the same article directory.

Avoid all your backlinks coming exclusively from directories, but mix them between article and web directories, ezines, blogs, Squidoo lenses, other private websites and so on. Use links from a variety of different sources.

So, if you avoid excessive keyword repetition, vary your anchor text and mix the source of your backlinks up, you can kick the penguin in the rear end and tell it to get lost.

Google’s purpose i to provide its clients with a good search experience – the search engine is not particularly trying to punish you – and the Google Penguin update is how it is achieving that. So keep writing articles!

When writing articles you must avoid keyword repetition and repetitive anchor text. The Google Penguin update is designed to detect webspam and backlinks originating from the same sources.
